Tom and Martha live in south central Virginia where they manage their 180 acres farm for quail habit and dog training. Previously, they lived in the Allegheny National Forest in western Pennsylvania where Tom had an Orvis store. Tom introduced Martha to bird hunting over his English setters, and while she liked his setters, she wanted a smaller breed for herself. In 1991 she got her first Brittany and established Piney Run Kennel where she breeds and trains Brittanys.

Besides handling her dogs to wins in all-age and shooting dog championships, Martha has put AKC Field Champion titles on many of them. Her dog NAFC/FC/AFC Piney Run Sam won the National Amateur Championship in 2000 and NFC/FC Piney Run Art recently won the National Championship in 2011.

Along with breeding and training she is an avid bird hunter and has hunted her dogs in the Southwest for Gambel's quail, in the Midwest for pheasants, and in the Northeast for grouse and woodcock.

Martha authored Training with Mo, co-authored The Brittany: Amateur Training with Professionals, and co-edited Hunting Dogs, Field Trial Dogs, and Brittanys. She has contributed stories to another anthology, A Feisty Little Pointing Dog, and written for several publications including Field Trial Magazine.
